My favorite tradition is picking out the perfect tree with our neighbors and then enjoying pizza and a Christmas movie with them.
We used to do a gift scavenger hunt when I was a kid. You opened clues that led to more clues, then finally your present!!
My favorite tradition is actually a couple of days after Christmas. My whole family drives down to my sister’s house in Kansas City where we celebrate a belated family Christmas and New Years together. We do a secret Santa gift exchange, minute to win it games, and eat lots of food (usually some super yummy KC BBQ and a crab boil or lobster for NYE). We’ve started the tradition about 15 years ago and it’s one I always look forward too since it’s not all that often that my two sisters, mom, and I are all together!
Going down to the family farm on Christmas Eve to gather with family.

Getting together with family
I love Christmas morning. We never let the kids open gifts until everyone is awake and I have a cup of coffee in my hand! We also won’t let them start to open until at least 8:00! I want the morning to last…it is a lot of work putting things together…I want to enjoy it a little!

Making the Christmas cookies
Sadly, traditions have to change. I remember going to each set of grandparents and seeing all my aunts, uncles and cousins. Now all the grandparents are gone and we have become them. We try to honor them by baking recipes they’ve shown us and hoping our families feel the same sense of tradition we remember.
Spending Christmas together as a family.
Being with family. When you are in the military you gave to travel to visit family so it is very special just being together.
Celebrating Twelfth Night. We have our traditional Christmas on Eve and Day, but then we have a special dinner and dessert on Jan. 6. It’s a low key way to close out the holidays.
We are starting a new tradition this year. I believe it will be my favorite one. We are renting a cabin for 3 days. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone together.

I can’t top the oatmeal and the horse barn, but because my husband was a minister the weeks leading up to Christmas and the number of services on Christmas Eve we had a very laid back k Christmas Day. A fire in the fire place and gift opening and waffles for breakfast. All good memories.
